I've learned to stay alive on dirt is to look as far as possible ahead for dust coming your way, or the smell of diesel or the slow tracks of a donkey cart. Saved me a few times, especially the speeding bakkie towards me around a bend.

I have never had a road helmet and have only once worn one when i took a bike for a demo ride. Have always worn MX peak helmets or my Arai which i would most probably wear until i conk in because my wife bought it for me as a special gift many moons ago. And yes i like the colour.
